  1. In depth report on the pressing problem of democratic reform

Walter Schiedel's research shows that throughout human history, inequality has only ever been reduced through violence. In an area of rising global inequality, we have an urgent need to introduce mechanisms that alleviate it nonviolently. The solution? Radical democracy globally. You mention this field as potentially promising, but an in depth look is warranted.

  2. Platform to connect ppl who are interested in collaborating on research part-time

I would very much like to have a community of people who are capable of doing research in the areas you consider relevant/high impact (for example proven by having a PhD) but chose not to be in academia and instead have a regular job (and possibly kids), and hence only a few hours a week for doing research. I‘m in this position myself (PhD in applied math, self-taught data scientist) and would like to contribute to research in the areas you suggest in your blog, but outside aof a traditional academic setting, and I do not know how to find…

  4. Matthew Legge - Are We Done Fighting?

I'd love to see a podcast with Matthew Legge - author of the little-known book 'Are We Done Fighting?'. I'm no expert but it seems to me that working towards a culture which better enables one to discuss ideas and explain one's own opinions effectively to those who disagree, appreciate the viewpoints of those on the other side of the political spectrum, become familiar with one's own cognitive biases, and to change one's mind, would be a huge contributor to reducing existential risks and speeding the progress and application of humanist ideas. This is the topic of Matthew's book and…

  5. Benefits of developing self replicating technology exceeds all other possibilities.

If it takes 10 years of high investment to develop a set of machines that can duplicate itself and deliver a large and increasing set of goods and services ( from mining to manufacture to delivery) and it takes 2 weeks to produce a copy, then within 2 further years, there can be one for every person. That outcome exceeds anything else.
It ends poverty (every person has automated systems to create whatever they responsibly choose).
It allows solutions to climate change (at several different levels - putting one such machine on the moon allows us to develop space technology…

  8. Timer to optimize time spent on website

Make the message immediately tangible — show a timer indicating average time spent by a visitor and challenge the visitor to use that time optimally. "You're going to spend 60 seconds on this website - what should you read?" — focus on funneling them via low-effort questions and cues towards key articles, information, and discovering what will engage and interest them

  9. High(ish) impact carrier paths for ordinary people?

I get that the main goal of 80000 h is to reach a large population to get at the truly exceptional people and i get that such a person can have a 100 fold or more impact but when listening to your podcast i feel like every episode is about a carrier that can merely remain in fantasy for me. What if you had just one episode on EA for regular people who have an IQ in the 120s or so (probably average for this community)? That might reach the bulk of your listener base.

  10. Article on Outsourcing

    Hello 80,000 Hours,

After reading your article on here about web designing I have become interested in it. However, it seems to me that is a high risk job to be outsourced. Will all web designing, web development, and programming jobs be outsourced or will those jobs always exist in the USA and the UK?

  12. Gene Editing

I think that generic engineering is a currently under-recognized issue. I think that in your rankings of global priority areas, there is a significant gap that leaves out this very important issue. To put it briefly, in same vein as bioweapon risk, this technology democratizes the ability to cause cataclysmic destruction analogous to nuclear weapon risk by orders of magnitude. For instance, small changes in bee genomes reducing reproducibility (as has been discussed in the context of mosquitos) could have as much damage to the global food system as the a nuclear winter would now. The social and economic repercussions…

  14. Create a career review about antibiotic resistance research?

Antibiotic resistance could cause 10 million deaths a year by 2050 (https://www.antimicrobialsworkinggroup.org/antimicrobial-resistance). Although this may be considered within the field of biomedical research, could the potential impact of reducing the dangers of antibiotic resistance merit its own career review on this website? Could this research tie into the existing profile on factory farming?

  15. EA careers that mesh well with parenthood. Profiles of people with high impact who were also raising kids.

There are a lot of parents (especially mothers) who take a career break or scale back on the hours worked in order to raise a family. How can these people go on to have a significant impact? Please profile people who had a large impact without neglecting their families. The first example that comes to mind is Jane Jacobs. What to do when the bottlenecks are limited time and career capital. Maybe talk about the role of volunteering in building civic society and the backbone of communities, the role of volunteering vs paid work.

  17. Contact National Careers Service (A

Contact national careers services (In the UK the National Career Service is the one to go for) to have 80k hours mentioned on their website, and in publications etc.
Seems like an easy win as you would be fitting into a already used service, with a known, receptive audience.

  18. Consideration of Jungian psychology

I noticed you seem to have not taken into account Jungian psychology in regards to a person's well-being. I find this problematic, because it seems to contradict your beliefs about passion and fulfillment through a career.

  19. Take into consideration problems of modern medicine

Based on your career guide, you seem to have failed to take into account these problems: https://www.care2.com/greenliving/18-biggest-problems-with-modern-medicine.html

  20. Using an emerging personality system in career guidance

There is a research team based in Portland, Oregon that has been working on a personality system for the past five years. They are known under the name Objective Personality. You should look into using some of the research from their system in career guidance. Their system has huge applications in AI, institutional decision-making, and career guidance. They have a YouTube channel called DaveSuperPowers.
