  1. High(ish) impact carrier paths for ordinary people?

I get that the main goal of 80000 h is to reach a large population to get at the truly exceptional people and i get that such a person can have a 100 fold or more impact but when listening to your podcast i feel like every episode is about a carrier that can merely remain in fantasy for me. What if you had just one episode on EA for regular people who have an IQ in the 120s or so (probably average for this community)? That might reach the bulk of your listener base.

  2. Automation

Automation of professions seems like a big thing. You have one blog post covering it well, but otherwise, the implications don't seem fully integrated into your advice. Most recommended earning to give paths appear affected. More attention seems due on this topic.

  3. Get annotate-able texts!

So you have so many inspiring things on here. People want to comment, ask questions and interact with the text. Furthermore it would be possible to open up the texts meta-level which allows more mind broadening.

  4. Translate 80000 hours to other languages

...starting with the content and languages that would have the most impact, of course. Why not opening a section for that in your website?
I would gladly volunteer for translations to the languages I am fluent in.

  5. Let people add comments onto the article body, similar to Google Docs comments

By introducing a Highlight & Comment feature you could tap into the multiple perspectives and wisdom of your audience.

For example, when reading the below statement in 'Part 1', I wanted to add that it might be because of a sample bias and self selection -- i.e., those who are not receptive to stress are the ones ending pursing and excelling in those jobs:
"One puzzle is that studies of high ranking government and military leaders found they had lower levels of stress hormones and less anxiety, despite sleeping fewer hours, managing more people and having higher occupational demands.

    One…

  6. Career quiz: Qualify what "good at math" means

It seems that the way people answer this question may reflect their education backgrounds, gendered /racial social conditioning etc. more than any genuine ability to learn math/science/logic. For instance, its pretty established within psychological literature that men tend to be more confident in their abilities to perform tasks than women (http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/edu/86/1/114/) and that people in general tend to be overconfident about their ability to perform tasks.

I think it would be helpful to add a small qualifier either explaining what "good at math, science and logic" means, or providing some metric with which to gauge one's past ability…

  7. In depth report on the pressing problem of democratic reform

Walter Schiedel's research shows that throughout human history, inequality has only ever been reduced through violence. In an area of rising global inequality, we have an urgent need to introduce mechanisms that alleviate it nonviolently. The solution? Radical democracy globally. You mention this field as potentially promising, but an in depth look is warranted.

  8. Please add a wider variety of careers.

Would prefer more breadth than depth, if you don't have the resources for both. Include international careers like Humanitarian Aid, International Organizations, International Development Banks, International NGOs. Include career starters like Peace Corps, Americorps, Teach for America, etc. (and you can discuss the problematic aspects of those programs too). Government bureaucracy, different types of journalism, advocacy, community organizing, direct action and activism. Prison reform, school reform, teaching. CSR, sustainable business practice, sustainable building, various sciences related to environmental preservation, agricultural science. There are a ton of careers out there even within a very narrow definition of social impact. If you…

  9. How can less intelligent people contribute?

Most of your career advice is geared toward people who want to pursue advanced degrees in various disciplines. But effective altruism can be an attractive idea even to less intelligent people, to people who don’t function well within academia, or to any type of person who can’t pursue an advanced degree (including those too poor to afford one). What are the most important career paths for people with average or below-average intelligence? What are the most important career paths for intelligent people who aren’t able to perform well in a traditional academic environment? Career advice geared toward such people could…

  11. Put more females on the 80,000 hours team.

I'm a male, but I recognize that there's a lack of female writers for 80,000 hours. A lot of the careers mentioned in the guide are male-dominated fields, and it would be helpful to have advice for females on how to progress through such fields, such as by providing links to strong female STEM organizations that can provide community and connections.

  12. EA careers that mesh well with parenthood. Profiles of people with high impact who were also raising kids.

There are a lot of parents (especially mothers) who take a career break or scale back on the hours worked in order to raise a family. How can these people go on to have a significant impact? Please profile people who had a large impact without neglecting their families. The first example that comes to mind is Jane Jacobs. What to do when the bottlenecks are limited time and career capital. Maybe talk about the role of volunteering in building civic society and the backbone of communities, the role of volunteering vs paid work.

  13. Which ideas were considered but discarded?

Would love a list of "trashed" ideas, and reasons why they were trashed. It would also give us a fuller view of the careers already covered by 80,000 Hours.

  14. Algorithms dominating financial markets: neglected risk with (potentially) large impact

Today, financial markets are dominated by algorithms: computer programs buying and selling financial products in a fraction of a second. Next to very real risks to the financial markets such as flash crashes (relatively frequently covered in the financial media), this raises a more fundamental issue: do prices of financial products still make sense?

Or to put it differently: if 70%-80% of the shares of companies (think Shell, Unilever, Apple etc.) are bought and sold by computer programs that only react to the actions of other market participants (think: if someone buys x stocks, then algorithm buys y stocks; if…

  15. Systemic Racism, Voting, and Education

You correctly discuss the global impact of voting, however you do not discuss shaping responsible voters. The votes of citizens in powerful nations have implications for people all over the world. In the USA the power of 36% of the population ushered in an administration which has had devastating consequences for migrants, refugees, and some of the poorest and most disadvantaged globally. Systemic racism continues to devastate the USA and played an enormous role in the 2016 election, as well as continued support for harmful policies. Systemic racism renders much of the population unable and unwilling to help people in…

  16. Taking into account career stalling

I think an interesting topic to discuss would be the facts and implications of career stalling - people finding that they cannot easily progress past a certain point in their career. For example, the "Peter principle" suggests that people are promoted to their "level of incompetence" and then fail to be effective or move up the career ladder. It would be interesting to know if there is much research showing whether this is true, and if it is how long it typically takes to happen, or what other reasons there can be for careers to stall. Also, it may have…

  17. Critical Feedback

Hi, First of all loved the journey from my first article, I think I've closely read about everything & followed steps like you guys have said. Truly life changing. I'm a Entrepreneur, product developer & designer & I would like to give some feedback which can hopefully improve the user experience & value

    1. there is too much emphasis on giving and donating in the start when I start to question what is this again a career guide or a life guide. with every product/service people wait for the Aha! moment like in facebook the first time you signed up…

  18. American Law School Student Paths

In America, getting involved in public policy, politics, or government frequently requires or nearly requires a law degree (usually from a prestigious university). A hoard of well-qualified students choose this path each year. While it may be well-trod, there isn't a lot of EA or 80,000 Hours specific advice on how best to navigate going into the public sector. Party politics is one thing and has more readily available advice. But 80,000 Hours offers no American advice similar to the Fast Stream UK approach for civil service. I think there is an eager hoard of future lawyers who would be…

  19. One option for med students is to work on Brain machine interfaces, this way they can work on the AI control problem also.

Brain computer interfaces have potential clinical applications in many diseases, such as paralysis following a stroke, or epilepsy. However, it can also help solve the AI control problem (described on this site as one of the most pressing problems to work on). As Elon Musk has described, by increasing the bandwidth of communication between the brain and the computer, effectively a symbiosis may be created between humans and AI, and we will not lose control over it. Secondly, a Brain computer interface may also help AI learn about human intelligence and emotions, which can help improve its decision making process.

  20. serious diversity problem

Your founders, core team, and advisors are all white-looking men. The women are all apparently relegated to support positions and are also mostly white-looking. How can you possibly know anything about doing good in the world if you have such a serious problem with your own in-house diversity issues? There are gzillions of wonderful folks from less-represented groups doing great philanthropy and development work!!!! You should have figured that one out a LONG time ago!!!
