How can we improve?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Automation

Automation of professions seems like a big thing. You have one blog post covering it well, but otherwise, the implications don't seem fully integrated into your advice. Most recommended earning to give paths appear affected. More attention seems due on this topic.

So you have so many inspiring things on here. People want to comment, ask questions and interact with the text. Furthermore it would be possible to open up the texts meta-level which allows more mind broadening.

      • Career quiz: Qualify what "good at math" means

It seems that the way people answer this question may reflect their education backgrounds, gendered /racial social conditioning etc. more than any genuine ability to learn math/science/logic. For instance, its pretty established within psychological literature that men tend to be more confident in their abilities to perform tasks than women (http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/edu/86/1/114/) and that people in general tend to be overconfident about their ability to perform tasks.

I think it would be helpful to add a small qualifier either explaining what "good at math, science and logic" means, or providing some metric with which to gauge one's past ability…

        • Put more females on the 80,000 hours team.

I'm a male, but I recognize that there's a lack of female writers for 80,000 hours. A lot of the careers mentioned in the guide are male-dominated fields, and it would be helpful to have advice for females on how to progress through such fields, such as by providing links to strong female STEM organizations that can provide community and connections.

          • Translate 80000 hours to other languages

...starting with the content and languages that would have the most impact, of course. Why not opening a section for that in your website?
I would gladly volunteer for translations to the languages I am fluent in.

              • Taking into account career stalling

I think an interesting topic to discuss would be the facts and implications of career stalling - people finding that they cannot easily progress past a certain point in their career. For example, the "Peter principle" suggests that people are promoted to their "level of incompetence" and then fail to be effective or move up the career ladder. It would be interesting to know if there is much research showing whether this is true, and if it is how long it typically takes to happen, or what other reasons there can be for careers to stall. Also, it may have…

Hi, First of all loved the journey from my first article, I think I've closely read about everything & followed steps like you guys have said. Truly life changing. I'm a Entrepreneur, product developer & designer & I would like to give some feedback which can hopefully improve the user experience & value

                  1. there is too much emphasis on giving and donating in the start when I start to question what is this again a career guide or a life guide. with every product/service people wait for the Aha! moment like in facebook the first time you signed up…

                  • Please add a wider variety of careers.

Would prefer more breadth than depth, if you don't have the resources for both. Include international careers like Humanitarian Aid, International Organizations, International Development Banks, International NGOs. Include career starters like Peace Corps, Americorps, Teach for America, etc. (and you can discuss the problematic aspects of those programs too). Government bureaucracy, different types of journalism, advocacy, community organizing, direct action and activism. Prison reform, school reform, teaching. CSR, sustainable business practice, sustainable building, various sciences related to environmental preservation, agricultural science. There are a ton of careers out there even within a very narrow definition of social impact. If you…

                    • American Law School Student Paths

In America, getting involved in public policy, politics, or government frequently requires or nearly requires a law degree (usually from a prestigious university). A hoard of well-qualified students choose this path each year. While it may be well-trod, there isn't a lot of EA or 80,000 Hours specific advice on how best to navigate going into the public sector. Party politics is one thing and has more readily available advice. But 80,000 Hours offers no American advice similar to the Fast Stream UK approach for civil service. I think there is an eager hoard of future lawyers who would be…

                      • One option for med students is to work on Brain machine interfaces, this way they can work on the AI control problem also.

Brain computer interfaces have potential clinical applications in many diseases, such as paralysis following a stroke, or epilepsy. However, it can also help solve the AI control problem (described on this site as one of the most pressing problems to work on). As Elon Musk has described, by increasing the bandwidth of communication between the brain and the computer, effectively a symbiosis may be created between humans and AI, and we will not lose control over it. Secondly, a Brain computer interface may also help AI learn about human intelligence and emotions, which can help improve its decision making process.

                        • serious diversity problem

Your founders, core team, and advisors are all white-looking men. The women are all apparently relegated to support positions and are also mostly white-looking. How can you possibly know anything about doing good in the world if you have such a serious problem with your own in-house diversity issues? There are gzillions of wonderful folks from less-represented groups doing great philanthropy and development work!!!! You should have figured that one out a LONG time ago!!!

                          • Improve Factory Farming Page

I've noticed that factory farming ranks very high on the list of problems, and I definitely agree that it should be where it is, if not higher. However, it only touches on one aspect of factory farming, ignoring some of its worst effects. For example, the factory farming page does not mention the impact on global warming, deforestation, other environmental issues, factory farm workers, and much, much more. The page should be updated with info on all of this, not just the abused animals (though that is extremely important as well).

                            • Add Trauma to problem profiles.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) impact health as well as behavior to such a degree that a high ACE score can shorten life for up to 20 years. The economic toll estimated is $124 billion. The effects of trauma on society are huge and complex: intergenerational circles of violence, associations with political extremism, addiction, etc. Parenting and anti-violence trainings, advocacy, financial support as well as mental health services need to be tested in their efficacy for preventing ACEs from happening, as well as reducing their impact. more info: http://vetoviolence.cdc.gov/apps/aces/

Bioengineering in the past few years has made tremendous progress and can be an extremely high impact option for engineers, physicians (working in medical applications of bioengineered devices) and even graduates of biological sciences. Things like neural prosthetics could undergo major advances. Please consider making a guide for this field!

The startup pages are interesting, though I have a feeling the focus tends to be on the tech industry. Can you do a page in biotech startups, or working on the biotech industry in general? There is a page on biomedical research, but biotech is kind of broader in its applications, and there are lots of things you could do besides research. I am doing a degree in molecular biology, and intending to enter…

Most of your articles - albeit very informative and well written - seem to direct their attention at either younger people, or those that have made different career choices than me. Having a background in arts and exercise, I find EA extremely attractive, but I only have few skills that will translate into the careers and scenarios. I also have to realize that if I'm to start a new career now, I won't have as many working years as someone twenty years my junior. Is it feasible to factor age into your career reviews and quiz to generate: adjusted lifespan…

                                      • Foreign Language Quiz

I think it would be amazing if the 80000 hours team developed a quiz similar to the great career quiz to advise on what foreign language one should learn. Languages are a massive element of the current jobs market but most online quizzes just advise which one to take based on your hobbies. It's incredibly confusing. Not to mention I always get a language I already speak - which is French or Spanish. I'd like to see a quiz that takes account of where one is living, their career, possible future trends, jobs currently available for those who speak the…

                                        • Is happiness in the eye of the beholder?

                                          Hello!
Thank you so much for your work!
                                          I have one wish:
Could you please address in your research and guidance the tension between objective and subjective happiness?
From a pure economic point of view, I agree with your attitude and analysis of where it is best to put our effort and resources. However, I believe that happiness has quite a bit to do with one's psychological state of mind, point of view and perception of "reality", rather than with the "objective" conditions of their "reality".
Surely one's basic needs have to be fulfilled in order for them to be…
