  1. One option for med students is to work on Brain machine interfaces, this way they can work on the AI control problem also.

Brain computer interfaces have potential clinical applications in many diseases, such as paralysis following a stroke, or epilepsy. However, it can also help solve the AI control problem (described on this site as one of the most pressing problems to work on). As Elon Musk has described, by increasing the bandwidth of communication between the brain and the computer, effectively a symbiosis may be created between humans and AI, and we will not lose control over it. Secondly, a Brain computer interface may also help AI learn about human intelligence and emotions, which can help improve its decision making process.

  2. Give serious consideration to the recent UN 2019 report on climate change.

I think it reveals the issue to be more pressing than 80,000 Hours currently suggests. In fact, it makes me really doubt the validity of a lot of the website's content because an apocalypse seems imminent to me.

  3. serious diversity problem

Your founders, core team, and advisors are all white-looking men. The women are all apparently relegated to support positions and are also mostly white-looking. How can you possibly know anything about doing good in the world if you have such a serious problem with your own in-house diversity issues? There are gzillions of wonderful folks from less-represented groups doing great philanthropy and development work!!!! You should have figured that one out a LONG time ago!!!

  4. Improve Factory Farming Page

I've noticed that factory farming ranks very high on the list of problems, and I definitely agree that it should be where it is, if not higher. However, it only touches on one aspect of factory farming, ignoring some of its worst effects. For example, the factory farming page does not mention the impact on global warming, deforestation, other environmental issues, factory farm workers, and much, much more. The page should be updated with info on all of this, not just the abused animals (though that is extremely important as well).

  5. Add Trauma to problem profiles.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) impact health as well as behavior to such a degree that a high ACE score can shorten life for up to 20 years. The economic toll estimated is $124 billion. The effects of trauma on society are huge and complex: intergenerational circles of violence, associations with political extremism, addiction, etc. Parenting and anti-violence trainings, advocacy, financial support as well as mental health services need to be tested in their efficacy for preventing ACEs from happening, as well as reducing their impact. more info: http://vetoviolence.cdc.gov/apps/aces/

  6. The age factor: a second career at 45

Most of your articles - albeit very informative and well written - seem to direct their attention at either younger people, or those that have made different career choices than me. Having a background in arts and exercise, I find EA extremely attractive, but I only have few skills that will translate into the careers and scenarios. I also have to realize that if I'm to start a new career now, I won't have as many working years as someone twenty years my junior. Is it feasible to factor age into your career reviews and quiz to generate: adjusted lifespan…

  7. Would be great to have a career guide for bioengineering research and applications

Bioengineering in the past few years has made tremendous progress and can be an extremely high impact option for engineers, physicians (working in medical applications of bioengineered devices) and even graduates of biological sciences. Things like neural prosthetics could undergo major advances. Please consider making a guide for this field!

  9. Podcast: adjust speech speed to that of guest so playback speed can be regulated better.

Rob Wiblin recommends using playback effects to adjust the listening speed for effective podcast listening. Great advice but his podcast is usually the one podcast where this is hardest to do because he usually speaks much faster than the guest. That makes speeding up an episode hard because Rob becomes hard to follow when the guest's speed is set for the perfect focus level.
I understand that Rob slowing down his speech will make episodes longer, but the ability to regulate the speed will make for better understanding and save some time again (provided you increase listening speed).

  10. Add a sustainability focus on your job board

Hello! I would love to see more of an environmental focus on some of your job postings, including a sustainability section of your dropdown menu. Climate change is one of the most challenging issues that our society faces today, and I think 80,000 Hours could have an impact on this issue by promoting job opportunities that deal with climate change or other environmental issues (such as resource depletion, pollution, conservation, invasive species, ecological restoration, social corporate responsibility, ect.). I'm currently doing my masters in Sustainability, and it is a rapidly changing space with a lot of innovation, creativity, and job…

  11. Jobs for life science majors

Hey nice site. I've been following you for a while, and your content seems well researched and different from the "standard" career advice I normally see. The startup pages are interesting, though I have a feeling the focus tends to be on the tech industry. Can you do a page in biotech startups, or working on the biotech industry in general? There is a page on biomedical research, but biotech is kind of broader in its applications, and there are lots of things you could do besides research. I am doing a degree in molecular biology, and intending to enter…

  12. Stories of exploration

I feel that exploration is one of the most hard to internalize pieces of advice and can be a tough bullet to bite. The natural inclination for most people is to stick with familiar things and go for the option that is most prestigious.

I think that reading some stories of people who've benefitted from exploration would be helpful for overcoming this.

  13. Foreign Language Quiz

I think it would be amazing if the 80000 hours team developed a quiz similar to the great career quiz to advise on what foreign language one should learn. Languages are a massive element of the current jobs market but most online quizzes just advise which one to take based on your hobbies. It's incredibly confusing. Not to mention I always get a language I already speak - which is French or Spanish. I'd like to see a quiz that takes account of where one is living, their career, possible future trends, jobs currently available for those who speak the…

  14. Is happiness in the eye of the beholder?

    Hello!
Thank you so much for your work!
    I have one wish:
Could you please address in your research and guidance the tension between objective and subjective happiness?
From a pure economic point of view, I agree with your attitude and analysis of where it is best to put our effort and resources. However, I believe that happiness has quite a bit to do with one's psychological state of mind, point of view and perception of "reality", rather than with the "objective" conditions of their "reality".
Surely one's basic needs have to be fulfilled in order for them to be…

  15. Add agronomist to career options

Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug is considered to have saved more lives than any other person in history by developing wheat varieties for impoverished countries. More innovations are needed in agronomy, especially for Africa. GMO crops also benefit the environment by allowing farmers to produce more food on less land with less pesticides.

  18. How to gain more career capital when you don't work at a reputable organisation

After uni I did an internship and then worked for a tiny non-profit that was not well run and where I learnt very little - now I'm at a larger international company and my job is fine, but they are far from being a household name and not at the top of their field. I have read your guide on gaining career capital in any job, but it would be great to have a guide on how to "recover" after a series of non-optimal career moves at the beginning of your career, in terms of salary, impact and career satisfaction/progression.

  19. Potential misunderstanding of the scientific method

There may be a misunderstanding of the scientific method with scientific articles seemingly being trusted blindly. An individual's perception of reality is subjective, including individuals involved in an objective process. Furthermore, no organization is immune to corruption, including scientific organizations. While the scientific method is important, it can't be fully utilized at the individual level, and individuals are the ones who read scientific journals.

  20. The "Gap yah" page and video doesn't resonate with non-UK people

Hi, I'm someone from the USA, and when I saw the "gap yah" video and read the guide web page that had it, I did not understand the humor at all, and because I was confused I found it off-putting or misaligned with the professionalism of the 80000 hours site. Please do something to change it so that people from other parts of the USA understand your message.
