How can we improve?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Stories of exploration

I feel that exploration is one of the most hard to internalize pieces of advice and can be a tough bullet to bite. The natural inclination for most people is to stick with familiar things and go for the option that is most prestigious.

I think that reading some stories of people who've benefitted from exploration would be helpful for overcoming this.

      • Please modify or delete the heading that appears every time you move up when reading a blog post.

Perhaps most people don't read like me, but I often move up to re-read something etc, and it's annoying to have that appear each time.

        • Search engine optimisation

When someone googles "should I become a", then 80000 hours should be the first on the list and also be on top as an ad.

          Similar searches:
          "how to make an impact"
"what should I do with my life"
          "careers"
          etc

This could easily be done via buying in a recurring SEO service that keeps it at the top.

          • Add agronomist to career options

Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug is considered to have saved more lives than any other person in history by developing wheat varieties for impoverished countries. More innovations are needed in agronomy, especially for Africa. GMO crops also benefit the environment by allowing farmers to produce more food on less land with less pesticides.

More and more of us are listening to books instead of reading them. Could you please record the 80 000 hours book? It would make it accessible to more people. Thank you!

                • Clarify what you're measuring

It seems like "cost vs. impact" is the main measurement for the effectiveness of a cause, but how are you prioritizing "impact"? (ie: reduced deaths, economic growth, environmental healing).
Specifically, more research has been done on the economics of happiness, and have you been successful in quantifying the impact certain causes have on happiness? Many "first-world" causes (ie: Big Brothers/Big Sisters, foster care, etc.) have more to do with increasing a person's self-worth than health or economic concerns. While these don't rank high in your models (presumably because of the cost of these programs with lower quantifiable results), the personal…

                  • Career suggestion: patent attorney

Patent attorneys are well paid (6 figure salaries possible after qualification with 5+ years' experience: http://www.insidecareers.co.uk/career-advice/patent-attorney-salaries/) and the profession is not that well known amongst STEM graduates. It's a possibility for someone who has a technical background but doesn't want to go into a strictly quantitative profession. There is good potential for earning to give.

                        Hi there,

Thanks for all the great work and analysis you have been doing at 80000 hours. I was just wondering if you had thought about analysing noncommunicable disease as a 'most urgent global issue', particularly the role of malnutrition (undernutrition and overweight/obesity), which has strong links to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer?

                        Using your own framework:
-Scale: This is a massive global issue, which affects all countries around the world. The latest Global Nutrition Report has found that malnutrition directly affects 1 in 3 people around the world. Overweight and obesity is projected to increase in all countries worldwide,…

                            • Workless Work?

Are jobs that mostly only require one's presence in the repertoire of possible job suggestions? Such jobs can be a good way of earning a living while doing independent research and writing. I, for example, am a security guard and spend about 75% of my work time reading. I also make a decent enough salary that I can donate a substantial amount of my income.

                                  • Career planning tool date field is backward for americans.

                                    In here:
"When are you next going to review your plan?"
The date field is DD/MM/YYYY, which Americans will find backwards. The international standard that avoids this is putting year first YYYY/MM/DD

                                    • What to do when you don't have "options" in Mind?

The career guide / quiz seem to assume a lot more clarity of options and purpose going into this than I expected. Almost like I need to be most of the way to deciding before I bother with 80000.
I don't know what options I have, because it's a fine line between none and so many vague / weak hopes or ideas. Without clarity of my options I can't even begin to gain value from your guide/quiz.
                                      What will you change?

I would love to be able to read 80000 Hours via the Apple News app. It'd be nice to have all my consumption in one place.

                                        • Text Display

(On chrome, 100% zoom, HD monitor) In the standard font, there is no gap between the dot and rest of the letter 'i', making it look like 'l'. This makes it much harder to quickly read through text. Zooming in for example fixes this, but why should the user have to do that?
