One option for med students is to work on Brain machine interfaces, this way they can work on the AI control problem also.
Brain computer interfaces have potential clinical applications in many diseases, such as paralysis following a stroke, or epilepsy. However, it can also help solve the AI control problem (described on this site as one of the most pressing problems to work on). As Elon Musk has described, by increasing the bandwidth of communication between the brain and the computer, effectively a symbiosis may be created between humans and AI, and we will not lose control over it. Secondly, a Brain computer interface may also help AI learn about human intelligence and emotions, which can help improve its decision making process.
I think this is certainly a career option/ research field for medical students, biology/neuroscience students, electrical engineers etc. and has the potential to be extremely high impact in the future, even though there is no mention of this on this website in the article on risks of artificial intelligence,or career guide for physicians.
Perhaps you could’ve worded it better, but I agree this could be a good career option for medical students early in their lives.
