How can we improve?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Broken link

In this frequently cited article, https://80000hours.org/career-guide/reports/management-consulting/, the link "WetFeet guide to Management Consulting" is broken.

  4. American Law School Student Paths

In America, getting involved in public policy, politics, or government frequently requires or nearly requires a law degree (usually from a prestigious university). A hoard of well-qualified students choose this path each year. While it may be well-trod, there isn't a lot of EA or 80,000 Hours specific advice on how best to navigate going into the public sector. Party politics is one thing and has more readily available advice. But 80,000 Hours offers no American advice similar to the Fast Stream UK approach for civil service. I think there is an eager hoard of future lawyers who would be…

  5. Career counselor resources

Provide training programs for career counselors who want to learn about how to give advice through an EA lens. And, recommend a few career counselors that members of the community can go to, to get sit down, one-on-one counseling sessions.

  6. Automation

Automation of professions seems like a big thing. You have one blog post covering it well, but otherwise, the implications don't seem fully integrated into your advice. Most recommended earning to give paths appear affected. More attention seems due on this topic.

  7. Please add a wider variety of careers.

Would prefer more breadth than depth, if you don't have the resources for both. Include international careers like Humanitarian Aid, International Organizations, International Development Banks, International NGOs. Include career starters like Peace Corps, Americorps, Teach for America, etc. (and you can discuss the problematic aspects of those programs too). Government bureaucracy, different types of journalism, advocacy, community organizing, direct action and activism. Prison reform, school reform, teaching. CSR, sustainable business practice, sustainable building, various sciences related to environmental preservation, agricultural science. There are a ton of careers out there even within a very narrow definition of social impact. If you…

  8. How can less intelligent people contribute?

Most of your career advice is geared toward people who want to pursue advanced degrees in various disciplines. But effective altruism can be an attractive idea even to less intelligent people, to people who don’t function well within academia, or to any type of person who can’t pursue an advanced degree (including those too poor to afford one). What are the most important career paths for people with average or below-average intelligence? What are the most important career paths for intelligent people who aren’t able to perform well in a traditional academic environment? Career advice geared toward such people could…

  9. Problem profile on 1-6C climate change

There's a profile on tail risk of climate change, but it seems to me like the potential politically destabilising impact and many knock-on effects on global society of even 2 degree climate change is worth an appraisal. There's also the non-zero chance that even 2-4C degree climate change becomes unmanageable. Would you consider writing a profile on this topic please? Thanks

  10. Why isn't "Biorisk" (or something similar) available as a filter in the Job Board?

Is it considered under "Other"? If so, why is that, considering how high it ranks in your other cause area articles?

  11. Algorithms dominating financial markets: neglected risk with (potentially) large impact

Today, financial markets are dominated by algorithms: computer programs buying and selling financial products in a fraction of a second. Next to very real risks to the financial markets such as flash crashes (relatively frequently covered in the financial media), this raises a more fundamental issue: do prices of financial products still make sense?

Or to put it differently: if 70%-80% of the shares of companies (think Shell, Unilever, Apple etc.) are bought and sold by computer programs that only react to the actions of other market participants (think: if someone buys x stocks, then algorithm buys y stocks; if…

  12. Systemic Racism, Voting, and Education

You correctly discuss the global impact of voting, however you do not discuss shaping responsible voters. The votes of citizens in powerful nations have implications for people all over the world. In the USA the power of 36% of the population ushered in an administration which has had devastating consequences for migrants, refugees, and some of the poorest and most disadvantaged globally. Systemic racism continues to devastate the USA and played an enormous role in the 2016 election, as well as continued support for harmful policies. Systemic racism renders much of the population unable and unwilling to help people in…

  13. Prayer is a highly effective way to change our world. Research here is neglected. I so wish this was an area of consideration!

Fund highly effective prayer studies with input from people highly skilled in prayer along with scientists who are open-minded to creatively work with interfaith communities to design these studies. The impact of prayer on world problems is a needed area of study that needs funding--the most effective types of prayer especially. Your consideration is appreciated.

  14. Consider adding cyber attacks on your list of global issues

Cyber warfare has the potential to destroy our most critical infrastructures. White hat hackers have already demonstrated how easy it would be to shut down our power grid, destabilize nuclear power plants, and steal sensitive government intelligence. I haven't done enough research myself to accurately graph the scale, solvability, and neglectedness, but if I had to estimate, I would say scale is at 12, neglectedness at 7, and solvability at 8

  15. Anthropology phd

Please consider doing an evaluation of pursuing a phd in anthropology and whether its recommended or not. What impacts and prospects it has in which areas.

  18. Discuss empathy and how it is literally imagining looking through other people's eyes and how it relates to that.

    Empathy.
Looking through other people's eyes. Really looking through your own. How this is the truest and most intense form of empathy and the strongest guide...

Also is there research on empathy/ on how everybodies conciousnesses are the same or research that relates to the level of conciousness that everybody has? Cuz if there is then u have evidence that empathy is important and everybody is equal and we should make a world where nobody should suffer.

    Please and thank you

  19. Native advertising

Hello! I am a Media Business Analyst at Qwertize and I noticed that you do not have native advertising. It brings additional quality content to your website that looks completely native to the configuration. It increases digital advertising revenues by attracting more viewers to your page!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

  20. Verification of links and update of research

I have noticed that a few of the links provided on the career guide do not actually work, I advise for all of them to be checked as it appears that some of the original articles have been moved to new addresses.

Another suggestion is to update the articles on the website in general (and the statistics mentioned). I noticed that many were written in 2016, which is recent, but I think many could benefit and be even more convincing if they were updated with the newest statistics (or maybe new research is necessary).

It also seems that the feedback…
